This luminous journal features the medieval illumination of Abraham’s Sacrifice—a scene cherished in the great Books of Hours, the devotional treasures that guided the faithful through their daily prayers. Once painted by hand on vellum, brushed with mineral pigments and touched with gold, this artwork carried the weight of hope, obedience, and God’s unfailing provision.
Here, Abraham stands on the mountain of surrender, his heart open to the will of God. At the very moment of sacrifice, the angel intervenes—an image medieval Christians saw as a radiant sign of mercy, covenant, and the God who provides a ram in the thicket when all seems lost. It is a scene of trust in the unseen, of faith that steadies trembling hands, of love that rewrites the ending.
Wrapped around your daily reflections, this ancient illumination becomes a companion for your own journey—inviting you to pause, breathe, and remember that every act of faith is met by the God who sees and provides.

A Book of Hours was the most beloved devotional book of the Middle Ages, used by everyday Christians to pray the canonical hours throughout the day.
These books were often richly illuminated, gilded, and personalized for their owners, becoming treasured heirlooms and symbols of faith.
From the 14th–16th centuries, more Books of Hours were produced than any other type of manuscript—they were the medieval world’s “bestseller.”
About the Abraham & Isaac Illumination
The scene of Abraham’s Sacrifice (Genesis 22) appears frequently in medieval manuscripts as a symbol of trust, obedience, and divine provision.
Illuminators often painted the moment the angel intervenes—Abraham’s hand stayed, Isaac spared, and the ram provided—emphasizing God’s mercy and covenant love.
These images were painted on vellum, using pigments made from minerals, plants, and precious metals, often framed by ornate borders of gold, florals, and geometric motifs typical of 13th–15th century Books of Hours.
